There are many, many pet foods on the market today. There are also many dubious claims about these pet foods. Your pet's food is an important part of your pet's overall health care. Claims made about pet foods that sound too good to be true are probably too good to be true. For example, pet food alone does not cure cancer or other serious diseases. Also, what is the economic or other interest of the person giving you advice on pet food? Who benefits from this advice? Is it your pet?
Yes, you may be able to buy a 50 pound bag of dog food for $10, and your pet may eat it; however, your pet is probably going to do much better over the long term by eating a Prescription or Premium pet food.
Prescription Pet Food Diets
Prescription pet foods are sold only by Veterinarians or with a prescription from a Veterinarian. If someone sells you a Prescription pet food without your pet being seen by a Veterinarian, you may do more harm to your pet than good.
Many pets that I see in my practice require a Prescription Pet Food in order to improve and/or maintain their health. If I prescribe a Prescription pet food diet I have a medical reason to do so.
Patients that need a Prescription diet include:
*Geriatric *Diabetic *Obese *Kidney *Cardiac *Digestive Problems *Allergies *Skin Problems *Liver *Cancer *Other ill or injured pets *Pets recovering from major illness, surgery or accident
Your pet may not need to stay on a Prescription diet forever; however, please let me help you make this decision, not the sales person at the pet food store or your neighbor. When the medical problem or condition is no longer present, then I am probably going to recommend that most pets switch to a Premium pet food.
Premium Pet Food
Almost all pets that do not require a Prescription diet can benefit from the consumption of a Premium pet food. The majority of pets will have better coats, skin, teeth, joints, etc. Also, most pets require less Premium food and will leave less waste in the yard or litter box.
I currently consider Eukanuba to be the best Premium food. Pet food manufacturers have told me that their Premium food is "as good as Eukanuba" - Eukanuba seems to be the standard for them. Science Diet is also a good Premium food. I personally feel that Eukanuba is better at this time - with better research and better use of Omega fatty acids, ingredients, etc. Also, Eukanuba delivers prescription and premium foods directly to your home or office, something Science Diet does not do.
